RAu M. E. and TANNER C. E. 1976. Echinococcus multilocufaris in the cotton rat: growth of intrathoracic metastases following surgical removal of subcutaneous cysts. International Journal for Parasitology 6: 151-153. The radical resection of large, established subcutaneous cysts of Echinoc5ccus multiloculuris results in a ZO-fold increase in the weight of its intrathoracic metastases. While all subcutaneously-infected animals also developed intrathoracic foci, these remained small in the presence of the massive subcutaneous foci. Animals whose su~utanwus cyst masses had been resected were, however, still fully resistant to a subsequent intraperitoneal challenging inoculation with protoscolices. INDEX

The carriage of larval echinococcus multilocularis and other cestodes by the musk rat (Ondatra zibethicus) along the Ourthe River and its tributaries (Belgium).

In Belgium, the carriage of Echinococcus multilocularis by the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) can be very high in some areas. This study was designed to evaluate the carriage of the larval form of E. multilocularis and other cestodes in a musk rat (Ondatra zibethicus) population trapped along the Ourthe River (southeastern Belgium). Six hundred fifty-seven musk rats were necropsied, and the larval ces...

Natural larval Echinococcus multilocularis infection in a Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus, captured indoors in Hokkaido, Japan

Natural infection with larval Echinococcus multilocularis was recognized in one of eight Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, caught indoors in 2009 in Ebetsu, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Cystic lesions were found in the right median and lateral lobes of the liver, with numerous alveolar cysts in the periphery of the lesions. Protoscolices were formed within large cysts. The laminated layers of the cy...

Serological and Molecular Characteristics of the First Korean Case of Echinococcus multilocularis

In December 2011, we reported an autochthonous case of Echinococcus multilocularis infection in a 42-year-old woman in Korea. The diagnosis was based on histopathological findings of the surgically resected liver cyst. In the present study, we evaluated the serological and molecular characteristics of this Korean E. multilocularis case. The patient's serum strongly reacted with affinity-purifie...
